Fit decides everything. Ball size, tongue weight, wiring connector and the tow rating of whatever the customer is driving all have to line up, so the booking has to ask about the towing vehicle rather than only the trailer.
Road-legal checks belong to the unit: lights, tyres, straps and plate. Those carry inspection dates that make a trailer unavailable wherever it is parked.
A trailer spends its hire detached from anything you can see. A tracker on the frame is how an operator knows which yard it is sitting in and whether it has crossed a boundary the hire never covered.
What the platform does here is narrow and specific. The same trackers fitted to the vehicles you rent out, with a boundary drawn around where a rental is allowed to go and an alert to the office when one crosses it.
The problem it removes: learning that a vehicle left the island at the point it fails to come back. The number to watch is out-of-zone events caught while the vehicle is still easy to reach, and hours between the alert and the recovery.
The tracker that goes in a delivery van goes in a rental unit on the same integration. Position is held against that unit record, beside its serial, its condition history and the reservation it is out on, so the question of where a vehicle is has the same answer as the question of who has it.
