Upsells and Add-Ons for Car rental companies

Ask a car rental operator what breaks and the answer is never the booking form. The constraint here is the gap between one return and the next pickup on the same car.

Car rental operations, specifically

Every rental turns on a driver file that has to be complete before the keys move: licence, minimum age, proof of insurance, and an authorisation hold that has to be placed and later released against the right card. A counter clerk assembling that from four systems on a Friday afternoon is where the queue and the exposure both come from.

The other half is the walkaround. Fuel level, odometer and existing damage recorded with photographs at collection and again at return, held against that VIN rather than against the booking, is what decides a damage claim in six weeks. Cars also move between branches and airports, so the location on the record has to keep up with a vehicle that was dropped somewhere it did not start.

Between a return and the next pickup sit refuelling, a valet and a condition check. That gap is short, and a car promised for two o'clock that is still being cleaned at ten past is the booking that gets refunded.

A tracker on the car closes the gap between the driver file and the vehicle. Position sits against the VIN beside the walkaround photos, and a boundary alert is what tells you a car has crossed a state line the rental agreement did not cover.

Upsells and add-ons

What the platform does here is narrow and specific. Add-ons, upgrades and bundles offered against the booking at checkout and afterwards, priced and stocked like everything else.

The problem it removes: margin left on the counter because the upsell lived on a laminated card nobody read. The number to watch is attachment rate, and average order value against the same unit count.

Add-ons draw on the same inventory as everything else, so offering a second helmet depends on a helmet being free that week. An add-on that oversells is worse than one you never offered.

One $225 reservation at checkout

Guest sees

  • 4 bikes, 7 days$225.00
  • Booking fee 4.5%$10.13

Guest pays$235.13

You receive

  • List price$225.00
  • Reseller commission$0.00
  • Paid modules and seats$0.00

Payout$225.00

The fee is added at checkout and paid by your customer, so the payout is your list price.

Card processing sits outside this on every platform, billed by your processor at their published rate.

What it costs

Bodhisys charges no monthly fee. The platform takes 4.5%, added to each reservation and paid by your customer rather than by you.

How does Bodhisys handle upsells and add-ons for car rental companies?

Bodhisys is rental operations software for companies that rent things, vehicles and experiences. It was built for rental inventory rather than adapted from a ticketing system, and it has been in market since 2023.

For car rental companies, add-ons, upgrades and bundles offered against the booking at checkout and afterwards, priced and stocked like everything else.

There is no monthly fee. A 4.5% charge is added to each reservation and paid by your customer at checkout.

Bodhisys is younger than FareHarbor and Peek Pro and has a smaller install base. An operator whose revenue is mostly timed tours, or who needs a long list of third-party integrations today, is better served by an incumbent.

Questions

How is this different from a tour booking flow?

A tour flow sells a seat at a time. A rental flow has to capture what leaves, where it goes, when it comes back and who is responsible for it in between.

What does Bodhisys cost?

There is no monthly fee. A 4.5% charge is added to each reservation and paid by your customer at checkout.

Can we move our existing data across?

Yes. Customers, future reservations and booking history migrate from FareHarbor, Peek Pro and Bike Rental Manager.
