Eleven o'clock on a Saturday

Three guests want to know when their delivery is coming. The office has a run sheet from last night, a driver who cannot pick up, and a mental model of where the van should be by now.

Two of the answers are close enough. The third is forty minutes out, because a stop went long, and that guest is now standing at a door waiting for something the office promised.

The cost is not the phone call. It is the promise made from a guess.

The stop that was skipped at nine

The expensive version of this is quieter. A stop gets missed at nine in the morning, and the office finds out at four in the afternoon when the guest calls to say nothing came.

By then the van is back, the driver has gone home, and the fix is a refund and a special trip. Caught at nine twenty, it is a five-minute detour.

This is the single strongest argument for putting position on the same screen as the run rather than in a fleet portal somebody opens on a Monday.

What a tracker on the run screen changes

An OBD unit costs around $20 to buy and about $70 a year to run, and it reports position into the same system that holds the run rather than into a second tab.

Completed stops leave the screen as they close, which turns the map into a live audit. Anything still showing behind the van is a stop the driver has gone past without closing, and the office can screenshot it and text the driver while the van is still on the road.

Idle time, hard braking and speeding land against the vehicle, the driver and the run, so they read as facts about this morning rather than as a line in a report nobody opens.

Van 1 leaves the depot with six stops in the order the run was built. Everything on the map is open work.

Closed stops leave the screen, so what is left on the map is the work that is left. A stop still showing behind the van has been passed without being closed.

What to do without a tracker

Ask for a close on every stop, by text, at the stop. It is worse data than position and it catches the same skipped stop.

Set a check-in at the halfway point of the run, at a fixed time, so a slipping morning becomes visible before the last four stops.

Give the office the run in sequence rather than a list of addresses, so a guest question can be answered as a position in the order rather than as a guess about the clock.

What it does not do

The tracker integration is fixed rather than an open list of devices. One supported unit, chosen so the data arriving is the same shape every time.

It shows position and raises events. It is no substitute for a driver scorecard, a payroll timeclock or an hours-of-service compliance system.

And the guest-facing version, where a customer watches how many stops away the van is, has not shipped. It is on the roadmap with no date published, so treat it as absent from what you would be buying today.

The other half of the same integration

The same tracker goes into vehicles you rent out, where the job changes from operations to asset protection. A boundary drawn around where a rental is allowed to go, and an out-of-zone alert while the vehicle is still easy to reach.

Vehicle tracking covers that side, and it is worth keeping the two apart when you evaluate.

How do rental companies track delivery vans?

With a tracker reporting position into the same system that holds the run, rather than into a separate fleet portal. Around $20 for the unit and about $70 a year to run it. Position sits on the same map as the stops, and completed stops leave the screen as they close.

That turns the map into a live audit: anything still showing behind the van is a stop the driver has gone past without closing, which is the difference between a five-minute detour at nine twenty and a refund at four. Guest-facing delivery tracking has not shipped.

Can we use trackers we already own?

No. The integration is one supported unit rather than an open device list, so the data arriving is the same shape every time.

Does it monitor drivers?

It raises idle, hard braking and speeding against the vehicle, the driver and the run. It is not a scorecard, a timeclock or an hours-of-service system, and what you tell your team about it sits with you.

Can guests see the van?

No. That view has not shipped and no date is published for it.
